Cellular Respiration — Lecture 4

Cellular respiration is the metabolic process by which organisms convert biochemical energy from nutrients into ATP, releasing waste products. The process occurs in three main stages: glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation. During glycolysis, glucose is broken down into two pyruvate molecules in the cytoplasm. This produces a net gain of 2 ATP and 2 NADH molecules. The pyruvate then enters the mitochondria where the citric acid cycle takes place. Each turn of the cycle produces 1 ATP, 3 NADH, 1 FADH2, and 2 CO2 molecules. Oxidative phosphorylation occurs in the inner mitochondrial membrane and generates the bulk of ATP through the electron transport chain...

SUMMARY

Cellular Respiration — Key Points

3 stages: glycolysis → citric acid → oxidative phosphorylation
Glycolysis (cytoplasm): 2 ATP + 2 NADH
Citric acid cycle: 1 ATP, 3 NADH, 1 FADH₂ per turn
Oxidative phosphorylation: bulk of ATP via ETC
Total yield: ~30–32 ATP per glucose

Got questions?

Frequently asked

What does "1 page" mean?
One page equals one image you upload to be summarized. So if you upload 5 photos at once, that uses 5 pages of your credit.
Do my pages expire?
No — once you buy pages, they stay on your account until you use them. There are no subscriptions and no time limits.
What kind of notes work best?
Clear photos of textbook pages, printed notes, slides, and most legible handwriting work well. We use Google Vision OCR plus GPT-4 to get the best results.
Can I edit the summaries?
Yes! Every summary goes straight into your editor where you can format, highlight, add notes, insert tables, and export as a PDF.
How is payment handled?
All payments are processed securely through Paystack, which supports all major South African cards and EFT.
